Chicago Puppet Festival 2027: Contrasting Sundays in the citywide rental snapshot
The festival’s overlapping-program Sunday sits above its preceding reference, while closing Sunday sits below its own. Wheelhouse explains what that split means for a date-specific rental review.
Updated October 14, 2026
Should the entire puppet festival run get the same treatment on your rental calendar? A program spread across Chicago’s venues makes that tempting, but the citywide snapshot offers a more useful distinction: the Sunday during overlapping conference programs and the festival’s closing Sunday compare differently with their preceding references.
Wheelhouse’s Chicago citywide observation dated October 10, 2026 shows contrasting Sunday comparisons. Booked Occupancy for January 24, 2027 was 3.3%, versus 2.6% for January 10, 2027; fee-inclusive Asking Rates were $284 versus $273. For closing Sunday, January 31, 2027, Booked Occupancy was 2.4%, versus 2.9% for January 17, 2027; Asking Rates were $276 versus $284. These measure already-reserved booked-night shares and advertised prices—not final Occupancy, achieved ADR or the festival’s effect.
Wheelhouse finds that the festival’s Sunday comparisons reverse direction: the Sunday within the conference overlap is above its preceding reference in Booked Occupancy and Asking Rate, while closing Sunday is below its own.
The reference dates have their own events
The analyzed stay window covers the full Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival schedule, January 20, 2027 through January 31, 2027. The organizer describes venues across the city. That establishes the festival’s footprint, not a measured lodging catchment or a reason to expect the same rental performance throughout the run.
Wheelhouse’s comparison uses the nearest preceding matching weekdays entirely before the full festival, January 6, 2027 through January 17, 2027. Those dates are not an event-free baseline. The comparison period includes ABCA's January 7–10, 2027 convention at McCormick Place. Its trade show runs January 7–9, while exhibitor check-in begins January 6; these are distinct calendar activities within the comparison window. The American Mathematical Society schedules the 2027 Joint Mathematics Meetings in Chicago for January 12–15, entirely within the January 6–17 comparison period.
Across the complete windows, average Booked Occupancy was 2.8% during the festival versus 3.0% in the preceding reference. Average Asking Rates were $293 versus $292. These equally weighted daily means describe the periods, but the supplied evidence has no uncertainty or listing-count basis for judging the differences significant. Nor does the advertised price gap establish a festival premium.
Festival dates also had more time remaining until arrival at the observation date. That matters when interpreting reserved-night shares, but booking horizons alone do not explain the comparison. The more actionable question is whether individual festival dates share the same relationship with their references.
The Sunday split gives the calendar a sharper focus
The festival window contains another substantial calendar overlap. AHR Expo's organizer lists the expo at McCormick Place for January 25–27, 2027 and the separately managed ASHRAE Winter Conference in Chicago for January 23–27. Both overlap the analyzed festival window; conference dates are not identical to expo-floor dates. This makes the Sunday during those conference programs worth examining separately from the festival’s closing Sunday.
On January 24, 2027, Booked Occupancy was 3.3%, above 2.6% on its corresponding comparison Sunday, January 10, 2027. Asking Rates were also higher: $284 versus $273. Closing Sunday, January 31, 2027, reverses that relationship: Booked Occupancy was 2.4%, below 2.9% on January 17, 2027, with Asking Rates of $276 versus $284.
That contrast complicates a blanket reading of the festival average. The lower period-average Booked Occupancy does not describe every date’s comparison. Equally, these observations do not show bookings rising and then falling: they compare different future stay dates at the same observation.
A tentative explanation worth testing is that lodging interest associated with overlapping programs is concentrated on particular dates rather than distributed across the festival. The verified schedules make that a grounded possibility, not a measured cause. A complete festival performance schedule, comparable-property observations and date-specific booking records would help test it; the citywide snapshot cannot identify which program, if any, accounts for the split.

Test the Sundays before treating the run alike
Use Wheelhouse Dynamic Sets to assemble a relevant group of comparable rentals and examine the contrasting Sundays. Choose properties that make sense for your rental’s location and characteristics. The task is to see whether the overlap-versus-close distinction also appears among those properties—not to turn the citywide Asking Rate into your property’s target price.
Then use Wheelhouse Performance Analytics to examine your portfolio’s bookings, pacing and pickup for those stay dates. Keep the comparison compact: use per-date booked-night shares, comparable booking lead times and the same set of bookable nights. Separate newly recorded bookings from cancellations and host blocks. Where comparable historical records exist, check each Sunday against its own same-weekday reference rather than assuming the current snapshot establishes a recurring pattern.
Stronger pickup on the overlap Sunday in your portfolio, accompanied by a similar distinction among relevant comparables, would support considering separate handling for that date. If that distinction is absent—or closing Sunday shows stronger property-level evidence—the citywide split should not dictate your strategy. Keep the focus on whether these Sundays need different treatment; extend that decision to the rest of the festival only when date-specific evidence supports it.
